Kebab is a dish known to all Poles, fast food, simple and tasty, and at the same time nutritious and cheap. Although probably every Pole ate a kebab, not everyone knows where this dish came from, how and when it came here, and where its great popularity came from. We will try to present to our readers the history and how this dish developed and how it reached Poland.

GP | Kebab - origin

The origin of the kebab is well known to gastronomy history, but is often misleading. Kebab does not come from Turkey, it is a dish that was already known in ancient Persia and probably comes from somewhere in modern Iran. For years, the kebab traveled with the Persians all over Asia, Africa and parts of Europe. However, the greatest influx to Europe was due to the Turks, hence its erroneous origin.

When did this dish come to Poland? Very, very late, it appeared in our country and only settled in in the 90s of the 20th century, and it came directly from Germany. Kebab is one of the so-called "gastronomic revelations of the fall of the Iron Curtain" because it came to us as a result of social transformations. Initially, this dish aroused great admiration. Tasty, healthy, nutritious, extremely quick to prepare, and at the same time cheap. The kebab machine was one of the best-selling machines in Polish gastronomy, while the kebab became a popular gastronomic hit.

GP | Kebab in Polish gastronomy

From the mid-90s to the present day, i.e. for almost 30 years, the kebab as a dish has changed practically the same way as the whole of Poland has changed. The classic kebab in dough or in a roll is still the most popular, but for the needs of modern gastronomy and its changes, the kebab has changed significantly.

His perception has also changed. Initially served in virtually every serious restaurant, today it is the domain of small venues, fast food and roadside bars with quick meals on site or to take away. Nevertheless, its perception has not changed, as it is still believed that kebab is a tasty, relatively healthy and nutritious dish. Let us add that nowadays, kebab has surpassed the popularity of hamburgers, casseroles and all other fast food dishes.

The number of eateries serving kebabs is constantly growing. Only the pandemic changed the whole thing a bit and today the kebab machine is not selling as well as it used to be. Nevertheless, kebabs are still very popular, because they are a dish that, apart from taste and food, can be easily taken away and eaten virtually anywhere.

GP | Kebab - what's next with this simple dish

The kebab will probably continue to be popular in Poland in the coming years. After all, it is a very nutritious and cheap dish, and at the same time available almost everywhere. As long as this fast food is in demand, half a kebab will be available. It also seems that this demand will not die, on the contrary, it will still be present in Polish gastronomy.
